What Causes Automatic Transmission Failure?
Vehicle transmissions play an integral role in getting your car rolling. By helping to transfer the engine's power to the wheels, while also regulating engine speed, the transmission is really the brain of your vehicle. Automatic transmissions are fluid driven mechanisms that need special care in order to stay healthy. If you begin to experience grinding gears, delayed responses from the automatic transmission or other issues while shifting be sure to contact your local auto repair specialist to identify the issue. More than likely it will be caused by one of the following problems, each relating to automatic transmission fluid.
Low Transmission Fluid
There is a common theme amongst the issues that cause problems for automatic transmissions, and it is the fact that there isn't enough automatic transmission fluid flowing through the mechanism. Transmission fluid may be low because the fluid is leaking internally between the engine and transmission or it is breaking down because it has hit its lifetime use. Be sure to check your transmission fluid at least twice a year to ensure the reservoir is full.
Leaking Automatic Transmission Fluid
The fastest way to predict transmission problems is if you can spot a physical automatic transmission fluid leak. If you notice a reddish fluid dripping onto your driveway from underneath your car you have just discovered an automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leak. As we stated ATF is crucial for proper transmission operation so it is imperative that you get your car to a shop right away before your transmission decides to grind to a halt. Fluid leaks generally occur from the seal between the engine and transmission or near the fluid drain plug, if equipped.
Clogged Transmission Fluid Filter
One thing that people don't often consider if they are experiencing transmission trouble is the chance that the filter that the fluid runs through may be clogged. Like an oil, air or fuel filter, if it becomes too contaminated with debris it will no longer allow ample amounts of clean fluid to pass through. For the transmission this means that it will be operating on less than ideal fluid levels and will most definitely suffer some mechanical issues.
At the first sign of transmission trouble be sure to take your vehicle to a certified mechanic right away.
