4 Tips for Proper Diesel Engine MaintenanceDiesel engines run quite differently from conventional gasoline internal combustion engines. This gives them distinct advantages in operation in terms of the power they can produce while maintaining decent fuel efficiency. However they do require regular service and inspection to ensure the engine is operating properly. Most of these services should be performed by a professional diesel mechanic in order to ensure they are completed thoroughly.

Gasket Inspection

Diesel engine gaskets need to be regularly monitored as these engines work under harsh conditions, putting a lot of pressure on the gaskets. Be sure that mounting bolts are tight and secure on a scheduled basis to avoid leaks of engine fluids.

Proper Oil Filter

Be sure to use the proper oil filter as sulfur residue and carbon are created when diesel fuel is not completely burned during combustion and it the particles can get into the oil. The filter you select for your diesel engine should be able to remove these contaminants which can cause damage to the inside of the engine if not filtered out.

Cooling System Flush

The cooling system is especially critical in diesel engines. Be sure that you keep up to date with regular coolant flushes and ensure there are no leaks in the system. Watch the temperature gauge on your dashboard for any indication of overheating trouble.

Glow Plug Inspection

Diesel engines do not use spark plugs, so in order to start a diesel vehicle the engine depends on compressed heat in order to ignite the air/fuel mixture. However, a cold engine will not be able to create hot enough air for the engine to fire. The glow plugs will warm the engine in order to produce the necessary heat. It is critical to monitor these glow plugs to ensure they remain in good shape, especially in the winter.

Proper maintenance is critical toward the longevity of any engine.
