Preparing your car for a summer roadtrip

School is out and summer is here, time to hit the road! Right? Well before making any extended journeys it is best to ensure that your car can handle the trip. There are a few important services you should have completed, or at least have inspections done, so that you can feel confident in your ride. These services will not only help improve your fuel efficiency, but they'll increase the safety of your trip as well.

Brake service

Even if you don't think you're having any brake trouble it is a good idea to have the system checked out before taking off any any long trips. Brake pads can wear thin anywhere and anytime, so it is best to ensure you have a healthy brake system before taking off.

Fluid check

Your car uses a number of fluids to operate, including coolant (cooling system fluid), transmission fluid, power steering fluid and differential fluid. From time to time these fluids need to be drained and refilled to ensure they are free of damaging contaminants.

Tune up

Prior to a roadtrip you ought to consider giving your car a proper tune up. This generally includes new spark plugs and plug wires, a new air filter, new fuel filter and possibly replacing the battery. All these things will help ensure a fuel efficient and reliable vehicle.

Oil change

If your car is due for an oil change be sure to do it before settling in for the long haul. Old oil can prevent your engine from getting the lubrication it needs to run properly. That issue could result in major engine damage requiring extensive and expensive repair.

Suggested maintenance

Check your owner's manual to see when your car is due for routine maintenance. If you're on the mark now would be as good of time as any to have these services taken care of.

Tire check

Your tires need to have solid tread and be filled to the proper air pressure to ensure a safe and fuel efficiency vehicle. Tires that are in poor condition should be replaced prior to any long roadtrips.
