Three Sounds that Mean it is Time for Auto Repair

Remember when you drove your vehicle off the sales lot and it sounded and felt like you were driving on clouds? It seemed so quiet as it glided over bumps and cracks without any signs of trouble. Nowadays does it seem like the engine rumbles and sputters and every pothole is 3 feet deep? Well increased mechanical volume in a car can be attributed to several issues, all of which should be repaired to avoid more costly damage. The following three problems are known to cause some of the most dramatic changes in automotive noises.

Bad Engine Bearings

Clunk, knock, clunk. Those aren't just the sounds that shoes in a washing machine make, but also bad engine bearings. The engine bearings are what the internal moving parts of the engine rest on and should they get worn out due to general wear and tear or low engine oil levels they will produce a loud knocking sound that could lead to major engine failure.

Exhaust Leaks

An exhaust leak is also a prominent reason for increased volume. The exhaust system carries hot fumes out of the engine, under from the passenger cabin and releases them at the rear of the car. If the system has a leak, such as a hole in a pipe or at the manifold, it will create a loud rumbling sound often accompanied by a bad vibration felt throughout the car. The sound will be most noticeable as you accelerate at a rapid rate.

Worn Torque Converter

Automatic transmissions have a part called the torque converter that can end up causing grinding noises while the car is in gear if it begins to fail. The biggest issue with torque converters is worn needle bearings. They often go bad due to operation of the car when there is insufficient levels of transmission fluid.

If you're having increased car volume don't delay in having the problem checked out. It will only get worse!
